Shortly after Cyclone Debbie hit Bowen earlier this year, the JCU Turtle Health Research team headed down to see how the resident sea turtles had been affected. Since Cyclone Yasi had ripped out the sea grasses, causing malnutrition in the turtles, it was a relief to find that Debbie had not done the same; the sea grasses were flourishing and the turtles seemed to be all in good health. With plenty more upcoming trips to Bowen and the surrounding area planned, the research team will be able to keep a close eye on the turtles throughout the year to make sure they stay healthy.
